Estimate required margin
Estimated margin: $585.00 in the quote-currency basis
Formula
Notional value = Lots × Contract size × Price
Estimated margin = Notional value ÷ Leverage
Estimated margin = Notional value ÷ Leverage
For 1 lot, a 100,000-unit contract, price 1.17 and 1:200 leverage: (1 × 100,000 × 1.17) ÷ 200 = 585.
The output is a simplified quote-currency estimate. If your trading account uses another currency, the broker may convert margin using its own current conversion rate and product rules.
Margin terms worth separating
- Initial/required margin: capital required to open or support a position.
- Free margin: equity not currently committed as margin.
- Margin level: a broker-specific ratio used to monitor account capacity.
- Stop-out / liquidation threshold: the level at which the provider may begin closing positions.
Names and formulas can vary by platform and jurisdiction, so use your provider’s current definitions for live decisions.
Why broker margin can differ
- Instrument-specific margin rates can override a simple leverage ratio.
- Regulatory caps differ by jurisdiction and client classification.
- Weekend, news-event or concentration rules can increase requirements.
- Cross-currency accounts require conversion.
