Execution quality matters after the broker check

Two providers can display similar headline spreads and still produce different real trading outcomes. Execution quality is about the price, fill behaviour, order rules and reliability you actually experience.

Start by understanding the market structure

The CFTC reminds U.S. retail customers that OTC forex is generally not an open-exchange trade: the dealer is the counterparty and controls the platform prices and conditions shown to its customers. Other jurisdictions and products can use different structures, so identify what you are actually trading.

What to measure

  • Spread distribution: not just the minimum spread.
  • Slippage: positive and negative fill differences from the requested price.
  • Reject/requote behaviour: where applicable to the execution model.
  • Order latency: time from your platform/request to acknowledgement/fill.
  • Availability: outages, disconnects and platform degradation.
  • Stop/gap behaviour: how orders are handled through fast moves.

What can distort a test

  • Different account types or liquidity conditions.
  • Different VPS/home network routes.
  • Testing only quiet hours instead of your normal session.
  • Mixing demo and live results.
  • Comparing different symbols/contracts.
  • Ignoring commission and financing.

A practical execution test

  1. Use the exact account type you are considering.
  2. Record timestamp, requested price, filled price, spread and order type.
  3. Separate normal-session trades from high-impact news and rollover periods.
  4. Compare enough observations to avoid judging from one good or bad fill.
  5. If latency is relevant, test from the same machine/VPS and network route you intend to use.

Latency is only one component

A lower ping does not guarantee a better fill. Provider routing, liquidity, order type, market movement and server processing also matter. For automated trading, test the end-to-end workflow rather than buying a VPS based on a city name or marketing number.

Execution measurement describes past observations. It does not guarantee future fills, especially during volatility or market gaps.
